Movies Ranked 1-100
About ranking films: As I went through this marathon, I rated each film using a ten-factor scale (see below): 1-10 for each factor to get a cumulative score between one and a hundred. (To make for easy comparison to IMDb ratings, I then divided by ten, so that 68 became 6.8.)
What I’ve learned in looking back at my ratings is that I wasn’t very good at it. My scores in the beginning tended to skew low, and this final list corresponds only roughly to the original numbers I assigned. More to the point, my subject impressions of the films have continued to evolve. A lesson in humility and the limits of (purportedly) objective analysis.
* The ten factors in my (imperfect) rating system: Story | Character | Technique, sound, visuals | Performances | Intellectual Engagement | Emotional Engagement | Texture and/or Humor | Social/Moral Salience | Distinct Vision | Subjective Impact.
