Vampyr (Day 99)

My Opinion: 7.5 || Disorienting, nightmarish horror film that deserves multiple viewings. The passage of time might have decreased the movie’s capacity to scare, but the visual thrill is undiminished.

A Woman In Berlin (Day 84)

My Opinion: 7.4 || Courageous look at fear and survival in Berlin at the start of the Soviet occupation. Based on an anonymous first-hand account published (and then removed) after the war, the film… Continue reading

Good Bye Lenin! (Day 78)

My Opinion: 7.0 || A well-balanced comedy/drama that captures German unification with rich period detail. The plot itself requires some suspension of disbelief, but it’s an interesting, lightly funny, and affectionate film.

Revanche (Day 77)

My Opinion: 8.0 || Starts as a thriller before evolving into a meditative character study. Some character turns give you pause, but the tone is beautifully calibrated, and the conclusion arrives with subtle power.

The Edge of Heaven (Day 74)

My Opinion: 7.7 || Complex, affecting movie about connections made and connections missed. After a strong beginning, the film becomes a bit strained in the middle (working too hard to set up the connections… Continue reading

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Day 62)

My Opinion: 6.3 || A trippy horror movie from the dawn of feature-length film. Like any 92-year old, it’s pretty creaky and won’t strike fear into anyone. But it’s a crazy ride, with fabulously… Continue reading

Lore (Day 43)

My Opinion: 9.2 || Impressive on every level — a great film.

Run Lola Run (Day 37)

My Opinion: 6.5 || A fun, quick adrenaline-rush of a movie. There’s nothing brilliant about the folding-back-on-itself storyline, but the uninhibited energy and brazen strangeness is delightful. On the downside, though, it’s a little… Continue reading

Fitzcorraldo (Day 29)

My Opinion: 6.9 || A strong creative vision and captivatingly deranged performance places this in the magnificent failure category. It’s a great portrait of ruthless, megalomaniac idealism and of what happens when we encounter… Continue reading

Nosferatu (Day 6)

My Opinion: 6.2 || A landmark movie that’s in bad physical condition. I wish I could have risen above the technical limitations. But for me, it was a movie more to admire than to… Continue reading

  • About Me

I'm an author and consultant in Portland, Oregon. My novel 'Beheld' will be published this June.

  • The Mission

To watch and write about one new foreign film a day for 100 days. It's a cinematic world tour -- with an emphasis on diversity of language, era, and style.

In addition to the daily commentaries, I'll post weekly and monthly wrap-ups. And explore cool ways of graphing the films and my responses to them.
