In The Mood For Love (Day 100)

My Opinion: 8.2 || Envelopes you in a world of humid longing — stifled desire has never been sexier. You could wish for fuller characterization, but movies don’t get more sultry or stylish.

Tokyo Story (Day 97)

My Opinion: 8.8 || A moving meditation on aging, loss, and family ties. The story can feel languid, but this is slowness with a purpose: producing steady imersion and leading to a resonant end. A triumph of quietly precise characterization and delicate storytelling.

Lorna’s Silence (Day 95)

My Opinion: 8.5 || Intimate realism and a very mature look at moral compromise. After a nearly perfect first half, it makes an audacious narrative turn and loses some tightness but remains absorbing to the end.

Elite Squad (Day 94)

My Opinion: 6.7 || Gritty crime drama that’s more realistic than revealing. The film strives to deliver real meaning and has the right ingredients, but the crowded, overbearing production never gives the story room to breathe.

The Seventh Seal (Day 93)

My Opinion: 8.7 || A great story beautifully filmed — dark, profound, and surprisingly funny. The play-like staging is occasionally stiff, but the movie has superb intellectual depth and emotional strength.

Certified Copy (Day 92)

My Opinion: 8.4 || An enthralling intellectual treat that also manages to be emotionally vital. Very few movies achieve this level of stimulation, and Juliette Binoche is an enthralling, trilingual knockout. Unfortunately, although the… Continue reading

Distant (Day 91)

My Opinion: 6.7 || Patient character study that does too little with its subject matter. The film’s attentiveness is admirable, but closely observed details are not enough if they don’t lead to insights or deeper feeling.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter . . . And Spring (Day 89)

My Opinion: 7.6 || Contemplative and beautifully filmed. There’s a delicate loveliness to the structure of the film and quiet power in several scenes. However, characterization is thin, providing only tokens of personality and… Continue reading

Before The Rain (Day 88)

My Opinion: 8.8 || Excellent. A revealing exploration of ethnic conflict that bends back on itself in a fascinating bit of nonlinear storytelling. You’ll scratch your head about whether the puzzle-plot actually fits together… Continue reading

Ikiru (Day 86)

My Opinion: 8.8 || A simple premise explored brilliantly. Inventive story structure, absorbing camera work, and profound feeling. Excellent film.

  • About Me

I'm an author and consultant in Portland, Oregon. My novel 'Beheld' will be published this June.

  • The Mission

To watch and write about one new foreign film a day for 100 days. It's a cinematic world tour -- with an emphasis on diversity of language, era, and style.

In addition to the daily commentaries, I'll post weekly and monthly wrap-ups. And explore cool ways of graphing the films and my responses to them.
